Outfall 001A did not discharge during the period. Attached are blank DMRs for this Outtall
with the No Discharge box checked.
Wastewater Outtall 002A (which is monitored in combination with site 3001), did not flow during
January. Note that during the quarter, we experienced exceedances at Outtall 002A as related to
BOD, 5 day quality (7Day max and 30 day average), and fecal 30 day average. The exceedances
appear to be the result of a combination of events. In January and February, sub-zero
temperatures froze wastewater in one of the pond vaults, halting all flow to 002A. In addition
some of our pond aerators went down, which is not untypical during mountain winter conditions.
Twentymile Coal personnel subsequently heated the vault to re-open the 002A channel and
prevent the treatment pond from overtlowing. Wastewater moving through the cleared channel
may have been impacted by the additional holding time in the pond, and lack of aerator action.
The non-operating aerators were later moved to shore when the pond ice melted in March, and
repairs were initiated by an MSHA certified electrician beginning on April 2nd. Three of six
aerators are currently functional, and additional aerator repairs are awaiting new parts.
Also note that treated wastewater from Outtall 002A, is eventually discharged into an abandoned
portion of the underground mine works, and does not discharge to any surtace streams.
Twentymile is monitoring this situation, and will send you an update as soon as April analytical
report results are available. Please contact me directly at (970-870-2750) with any questions.
Very truly yo rs,
Brian A.
