Surface Water Monitoring
Records of flow on Curtis Creek are presented for the three Par shall flumes
located on Curtis Creek. HRS-1 is the northern most upstream station.
HRS-5 is located on Jens en's property just above a Rienau stockpond. Both
stations are located upstream of "First Fast" mining. HRS-2 is located
downstream of "First Fast" mining. The flume at HRS-S is, smaller than those
of HRS-~ and HRS-2. This change was incorporated to try to obtain a more
sensitive record of low flow conditions (when any loss of surface water
attributable to mining would be most evident},
It is observed from the data that [he flow at the downstream station HRS-2
was always greater than at the upstream station HRS-1. However, the flow
at HRS-2 was not always less than the flow at upstream station HRS-S.
Since the capacity of the flume at HRS-5 (about 6 cfs) was never exceeded,
it is postulated that the pond below HRS-5 was freezing up causing some
backup of water toward the flume. In support of this hypothesis is the
data trend observed after April 10, 1981 in which flows at HRS-2 are always
greater than flows at HRS-5. Groundwater data for the alluvial wells.
indicates surface water is not being lost through the alluvium (see ground-
water monitoring).
