IV. ENVI1mI~NT4~.L RFSOi7Ff~S
4.1 SITE DESCRIP'T'ION AND LAND USE INFORMATION (2.04.3)
4.1.1 Background Information
The Trinidad Basin Mine has been in existence since 1977
and since that time three different operators have conducted mining
operations at the site. The three operators axe as follows: Del Aqua
Coal C~~any (initial operator), Triad Industries, Inc. (interim
operator) and Trinidad Basin Mining, Inc. (current operator). The
initial operator oh+aincrl MLRB Limited Impact Permits (110) to conduct
m;n;nq in both Sections 15 and 22. The reader is referred to MLRB
Permit Numbers 77-2 and 78-145 respectively. Ho~,ever, mining has
' not occurred in Section 15 since a Cease and Desist Order was
placed on the operation on January 4, 1979. Mining activities
have continued in Section 22 pursuant to the terms of ML,F~
Permit Number 79-53. All three of the above operators were inwlved
>n mining of this section.
The current operator succeeded to the operation in August
of 1980 and has been actively mining in Section 22 since that time.
To date no mining activity has occurx~d in Section 15 except a
l;m;tsd amount of exploration to determine coal reserves and obtain
geologic information for use in development of a mine plan.
As can be seen from the above narrative, m;n;nq activities
have oc.~curred in this portion of Del Agua Canyon since 1977. However,
the Canyon has been extensively undergmimd mined in the past as
is evidenced by the refuse piles and coking ovens present in the
~. ~ - - -
