4.3 ORAL DESCRIPTION OF GEOIAGY AND HYDROLOGY (2.04.5
4.3.1 General C~ology
The Trinidad Basin Mine, as stated above, is located west
of Ludlow in Del Agua Canyon. The coal to be mined is located
in the Trinidad Coal Field. This field, according to Johnson
(1961), is comprised of approximately 1,100 square miles in Huerfano
and Las Animas aunties. The ~ar;es of this field are as
follows: Southern: Colorado-New Mexico BoundaLy; Northern:
Huerfano River (northern extent is just short of this landmark);
4~stErn: eastern front of Sangre de Cristo's; and Eastern:
longitude 104° 30' west. As stated by Johnson (1961); "gal occurs
in rec7cs limited to the structural trough of the Paton Hasin",
and the Basin can be identified as the principal. structural feature
• of the field. Figure IV-1 is a general stratigraphic section of
the Del Agua Canyon area within this field.
The most noteable geological feature within the general
locality of the mine is the Spanish Peaks. These peaks resulted
from the doming of igneous rocks after formation of the faulted
anticlines of the Rockies. Both of these peaks are highly visible
to the west of the mine site.
Associated with the Spanish Peaks are the many dikes
that radiate outward frrnn them. A large dike, the Apishapa Craig,
can be seen as the large ridge east of mile marker 30. Another
visible expression, but different geologic structure is the Black
Hills located between Aguilar and Trinidad on the eastern plains.
Ln this situation, the intrusive material has been transmitted through
horizontal cracks in the rock (known as a sill) and affords pro-
IV-10
