1

' CULTURAL RESOURCES
' Survey Results
During the cultural resource inventory of the Grand Mesa Coal
Company's Red Canyon Mine Plan Area, a total of two archaeological
' sites and five isolated finds were located. All of these resources
are of aboriginal origin. Descriptions of the sites and isolated
finds are presented below; detailed information can be obtained
' from the State of Colorado Site Inventory Record and Isolated Find
Records in Appendix A and from Table I.
t Sites
5DT541 is a sparce lithic scatter of 51 flakes located on the
east side of an intermittent drainage just southeast of Brimstone
' Corner in the Transect 17 buffer zone. The site measures 40 m. in
a north to south orientation and 10 m. east to west. Vegetation
on the site includes pinyon-juniper, sage, serviceberry, prickly
' pear, yucca and scarlet 9ilia. The northern tip of the site is marked
by an outcrop of basalt boulders while the southern end is characterized
by a light bro~~~n loess of unkno~•m depth. No diagnostic artifacts or
' features were observed.
5DT542 is also a lithic scatter ~•iith 112 artifacts located on the
' west side of an intermittent drainage approximately 100 m. southwest
of Brimstone Corner and is in Transect 17 as well. The scatter is
confined to an area measuring 60 m. north to south and 54 m. east to
west. Vegetation on the site includes pinyon-juniper, sage, service-
' berry, prickly pear and scruboak. The soil at the site is a light
brown loess of unknown depth. 5DT542 is located approximately 280 m.
southwest of 5DT541. No diagnostic artifacts or features were observed.
' Isolated Finds
' SDT543 consists of a single white chert nonutilized secondary
flake located in an area marked by an outcrop of basalt boulders.
SDT543 is located in Transect 27. No other artifacts or features were
observed.
1
SDT54
i consists of five nonutilized flakes concentrated in an area
2 m. x 2 m. One of the flakes is a quartzite secondary flake while the
others are small, thinning flakes. IF-2 is located in Transect 27. No
' other artifacts or features were observed.
' SDT545 is a single quartzite interior flake, also located in an
area of basalt outcrop. This isolated find shows evidence of unifacial
~•rear along one side indicating that it may have been used as a scraper.
No other artifacts or features were observed.

12
1
~ i
