1
MINREC, INC. - NORTH THOMPSON CREEK MINES
' STORM WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN - INACTIVE MINES
1. Description of Mining Activities
' The North Thompson Creek Mine is a reclaimed underground coal
mining operation. The mine was recontoured and seeded with
native grasses and shrubs during 1986 and 1987. All support
' buildings and facilities were removed from the site during
1986 and 1987. There is an access road to the reclaimed area,
three sediment ponds and three water treatment ponds on the
' site.
The North Thompson Creek No. 1 Mine was operated more or less
' continuously from the 1950's through 1984. The modern era of
mining began in the late 1970'x. Coal was mined by longwall
methods beginning in 1981. Coal was delivered to the surface
with belt conveyors. The coal was washed in a modern coal
' wash plant and then transported off the site with highway type
trucks.
' The activities that occurred at the North Thompson Creek No.
1 Mine included, stockpiling and washing of coal, water
treatment, sewage treatment in lagoons, warehousing, material
storage and maintenance. Diesel fuel and gasoline were stored
' in above ground tanks. waste from the coal washing process
was disposed of at the site refuse area.
' The No. 3 Mine is located approximately 0.4 miles west of the
No. 1 Mine. The No. 1 Mine is located south of North Thompson
Creek and the No. 3 Mine is located north of North Thompson
' Creek. Mining in the No. 3 Mine occurred during the same time
frame as the No. 1 Mine. During the modern era of mining in
the No. 3 Mine, coal was transported to the No. 1 Mine by an
overland conveyor. The activities that occurred on the No. 3
' Mine site were limited to material storage and maintenance.
The mines are located approximately 10 miles southwest of
' Carbondale, Colorado on North Thompson Creek Road. The Denver
& Rio Grande Western Railroad Company has a mainline track
that terminates near Carbondale.
' The surface permit area encompasses 320 acres. A total of 43
acres were disturbed.
' 2. Site Mao
The site map is enclosed.
t 3. Description of Potential Pollutant Sources/Material Inventory
a. No materials are stored or have been disposed of in a
' manner to allow exposure to stormwater discharge.
1
