AN I S VALLEY CLIMATOLOGY <br />Saguache County has low relative humidity and little pre- <br />Cepitation. Average annual precipitation varies from 7.45 <br />inches near Center to 12.21 inches at Sargents (Colorado <br />Climate Center, Ft. Collins, Colorado). Thy overage pre- <br />cipitation in the higher elevations can reach 30 inches per <br />year. Maximum and minimum monthly preccipitation is ex- <br />tremely variable. The maximum monthly precipitation re- <br />corded at Saguache is 5.00 inches in August, and the <br />minimum recorded monthly precipitation at the same loca- <br />tionis 0.00 in August. The majority of precipitation is <br />from summertime connective storms, which are due to more <br />fre4ueht air movement from the south and more solar radia- <br />tion. Monthly precipitation data and total yearly pre- <br />cipitation, including snowfall, and number of days per year <br />receiving different amounts of precipitatior~ are provided <br />in Tables 2 and 3. Average annual snowfall ranges from 29 <br />inches at Saguache to 93 inches at Sargents. A few large <br />snowstorms dominate annual snowfall averages with most Years <br />below average. <br />Average monthly temperatures in Saguache Cc>unty range from <br />20.S:F in January to 64 .SeF in July. The mean maximum varies <br />from 35.8°sF in January to 81.4eF in July. while the average <br />minlmum varies from 4.5eF in January to 47.6%F in July. <br />The prevailing wind direction is from the south and/or the <br />southwest, and average wind speeds are about 10 mph (per- <br />sonal communication, Fir. Brad Jones, Saguache County Land <br />Use). The nearest wind summary data was obtained from the <br />Alamosa which is located about 50 miles to the south of <br />Saguache. The annual wind rose for Alamosa, Colorado is <br />provided in Figure 10. <br /> <br />• -49- <br />
