' 342-4 Critical Area P1~
Afulching
Critical area plantings shall be mulched where rapid establishment of seeded
species is essential, or where one or more of the following factors are likely
to cause failure of the planting, as determined by [he responsible technician.
1. Low or erratic precipitation
~ 2. Droughty or slowly permeable soils
3. High soil temperatures
' 4. Erosive soils
~ 5. Drying winds
' I:here need for mulching has been determined, follow standard and specifications
for "Plulching" (484). Cover crops or crop residues produced on the site will
satisfy mulching requ~i rements if present in sufficient quantity to provide
needed soil protection and moisture conservation.
Planting trees, shrubs and vines
1. Planting of woody plants must be done in late winter or early spring hefore
bud burst.
2. Roots shall be kept moist a[ all times before planting.
3. Roots should be spread out as close to natural position as possih]e during
planting.
4, Holes shall be deep and wide enough to accommodate seedlings without bending
rOOCS.
5. Stock should be set the same depth as in the nursery or slightly deeper.
In no case should a plant be set shallower [Ilan it was in the nursery.
6. Soil shall be packed well around roots until seedling cannot he easily pulled
from the ground. Care should be taken to eliminate all air pockets in the
soil around [he roots.
7. Plants shall iJe wnrerod at planting time.
Supplemental water for establishment of plantings
1. Seeded plantings. In low rainfall areas, where water is available and where
rapid establishment is needed, irrigation of new seeding should be performed
during the first growing season. Water should he applied at approxima[e].y
:-week intervals, at a rate of 3/4 - 1 inch per application, when rainfall
is deficient for plan[ development.
2. Wo_Jdv plantings. Woody transplants should be watered at time of planting,
followed by application oC a[ leas[ 1 gallon per plan[ per wee/;, applied
to the soil at [he base of the plant during [he firs[ growing season.
USDA/SCS/Colorado-7/81 TGN 1/170
