United States Department of the Interior
3598(162)
C-0119985
AmerAlia, Inc.
Attention: Mr. Roger
818 Taughenbaugh Blvd.
Post Office Box 1330
Rifle, Colorado 81650
Dear Mr. Day:
BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT
White River Resource Area
73544 Highway 64
Meeker, Colorado 81641
May 16, 2000
RECEIVED
MAY 19 ~
Division of Minerals & Geolo9Y
Day I~ ' ~`~l~t~l ~~I
~,~(U.U
`~'J~
On April 28, 2000, a meeting with Joe Frank, Jerry Daub and Jack Clark was
held at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Meeker Colorado. Well
configuration diagrams for the following AmerAlia's water monitoring wells:
MWD1, MWD2, MWB2, MWA2, MWU2, and AM2 were submitted during this meeting. At
that time the BLM expressed concerns about the gas-lift sampling methodology
being used at these wells. Further research into the sampling procedures
indicates this sampling method should not be used for sampling BTEX.
According to ASTM D9448-BSa "Standard Guide for Sampling Groundwater
Monitoring Wells" page 10, Section 6.1.9.9, "AS already mentioned, gas-lift
methods result in considerable sample agitation and mixing within the well,
and cannot be used for samples which will be tested for volatile organics."
Another area of concern is the proper purging of wells MWD1, MWD2, and MWB2.
Calculated well bore volumes df the standing water in these wells, using
February .2000 water level~data,~are as follows: 1,095 gals, 1,062 gals, and
662 gals respectively. Stock tanks were set on site the first part of May to
contain the water from the dissolution surface water wells. However, the
capacity,of these tanks do not appear to be sufficient to contain an adequate
volume of water that has to be removed from the wells to assure that
representative formation water is being obtained for the water quality
samples. It would also appear that the length of the PVC pipe into the water
column would make it difficult to remove the necessary volume of water,
particularly if the well recharges slowly.
Prior to the commencement of pilot operations a water quality baseline has to
be established. At this time it does not appear as though the current
sampling methodology is appropriate to establish this baseline. Please change
or modify the current sampling methodology to address the above concerns.
If there any questions, please contact Paul Daggett at (303) 878-3601.
Sincerely,
~; ~ r~ ~
Ji ~ agney
Field Manager
Cc:
Attn: Allen Sorenson
Colorado Division Minerals and Geology
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman $t.;'ROOm 215
Denver, CO 80203 .
