The existing configuration of soil
horizons in the form of soil profiles will be lost during salvage, but upon reclamation, this soil
material will be overlain by a protective mostly native vegetational cover that will allow soil
development to again proceed to a degree that it has been unable to during its most recent
history of agricultural use and abuse.
Mitigation of Impacts
Upon the initiation of reclamation, the existing degraded vegetational and soil resources of Dowe
Flats will be replaced and incorporated, respectively, by/into a landscape of far greater
topographic and vegetational diversity than exists now. Vegetation types will include upland
grasslands and shrublands, wet meadows and marshes, as well as open water, and moist
shrubland and forests in protected coves. All will be integrated into a complex mosaic that will
provide much more diverse plant and wildlife habitat, as well as pleasing aesthetic qualities.
•
•
