'This area is mapped a wetlar-d it J) and apparently is a localized <br />area where the water table is higher than the elevation of the stream bed. Tl»s stretch of drainage is <br />wet in the spring and summer and is dry during the winter. <br />One of the springs mapped by the USGS is located in a westerly flowing side drainage on the western <br />side of Rabbit Mountain (NWl/4,NW1/4,NE1/4 Section 15, T3N, R70W). This spring ooaus on laM <br />east of the Co6enartcy propeRy. 'The spring appears to issue from the oontact of the Upper and Iawec <br />Muddy Members of the Dakota Formation. There is evidence on the aerial photographs that suggests <br />a mirar fault may coincide with the spring. A possible fault trace has been mapped on the aerial <br />photos that trends across the spring location. Ttte water in the spring appears to pond in a small area <br />and flow a short distance downstream. Before reaching the Cotenancy property, the water apparently <br />infiltrates into the unconsolidated alluvium and does not resurface on the Dowe Flats property. <br />Ttte other mapped spring is located in the nortlt~erttral portion of the Cotenancy property <br />• (NEl/4,SE1/4,SE1/4 Section 9, T3N, R70W). Examination of the aerial photographs indicates that the <br />spring may be re]ated to a contact betwcen limestone and shale in the Niobrara Formation. The spring <br />appears to be small and oonciac of a circular area that apparently has been scraped to provide a <br />shallow basin for livestock use. This spring does not appear to oonhain any appreciable amounts of <br />water during the winter months. <br />Ground Water t~ly <br />The Dowe Flats project groundwater monitoring system is comprised of four ground water monitoring <br />wells located up- and down-gradient of the proposed project area. One well is upgradient of the <br />proposed quarry site and the mma;n;ng three monitoring wells are situated in downgradient positions. <br />These wells are used to establish background water quality and piezometric conditions for the shallow <br />alluvial aquifer. The locations of the four ground water monitoring wells are shown on Figure G-2. <br />Maittxing and sampling activities of the surface and ground water were initiated on June 8, 1990 and <br />have continued on a gttart~ly basis. <br />LJ <br />
