STATISTICAL COMPARISON OF DISTURBED/REFERf'.NCE AREAS
As mentioned above, in consultation with the surface owner,

DOW, and MLRD, it was determined that reestablishing a
juniper-pinyon woodland community was not consistent with the
reclamation goals for the permit area. Thus, a reference area was
not identified to mirror the juniper-pinyon woodland disturbance
area. Reference areas were selected for the sagebrush rangeland
and native grassland communities. The location of both are shown
on the included map. The sagebrush reference area is composed of
one continuous area. The native grassland community is largely
restricted to the area of disturbance. A large continuous area
that exactly matched the disturbance areas was not found. Instead,
the native grassland reference area is composed of two separate
areas. The location of all reference areas are designated on the
enclosed map.
Calculations for the comparison of reference and disturbed
•
areas are included in the Appendix (for cover, see Table 19; for
production, see Table 22; for woody plant density, see Table 24).
The comparisons were carried out in accordance with the description
on page 16 of the Division's "Guidelines for Compliance with Land
Use and Vegetation Requirements of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board for Coal Mining, October, 1988". Table 19
indicates that both reference areas match their respective
disturbance areas in terms of total perennial vegetative cover.
- 16 -
