<br />Gilcrest Series
<br />'Th~Gilcrest series consists of deep, somewhat ex-
<br />~~ssively drained soils. These Boils formed on alluvial
<br />°tel~aces and fans in sandy alluvium. The elope is 0 to
<br />R av!lltge annual pre ipitation is 12 inches.OThe eve ge
<br />~ annual temperature is 62° F, and the frost-free season
<br />fs 180 to 160 days. The native vegetation is mainly
<br />plelns grasses and forba.
<br />Ia,, a representative profile the surface layer is brown
<br />sandy loam about 4 inches thick. The upper part of the
<br />~ubsotl is pale-brown sandy loam about 23 inches thick,
<br />yynnd the lower part is pale-brown gravelly coarse sandy
<br />loam about 8 inches thick. The underlying material is
<br />very pale brown gravelly sand that extends to a depth
<br />of 60 inches or more.
<br />.Permeability is rapid, and the available water capac-
<br />•ity,is low. The surface layer and subsoil are mildly
<br />alkaline, and the underlying material is moderately
<br />alkaline. The root zone extends to a depth of 60 inches
<br />~r lr~e. These soils are used for grazing.

<br />Al-0 to 4 inches, brown (7,6YR 6/2) Bandy loam, dark
<br />brown (7.SYR 3/2) when moist; weak, medium, platy
<br />• structure; slightly hard, very friable; slightly sticky
<br />'~. - and slightly plastic; many very fine roots; 6 percent
<br />-t gravel; mildly alkaline; clear, smooth boundary.
<br />B2t--4 to 27 inches, pale-brown (lOYR 6/3) sandy loam,
<br />~~'~ dark brown (lOYR 4/3) when moist; weak medium,
<br />prismatic structure parting to moderate, me~ivm, sub-
<br />'s angular blocky; hard, very friable; slightly sticky and
<br />r slightly plastic; thin, patchy, clay films in pores and
<br />on send grains; 10 percent gravel; mildlq alkaline;
<br />~ *` clear, smooth boundary.
<br />B3-27 to 35 inches, pale-brown (IOYR 6/a) gravelly coarse
<br />Bandy loam, brown (lOYR 6/3) when moist; weak,
<br />- medium, subangular blocky structure; hard, very friable;
<br />slightly sticky and slightly plastic: 16 percent gravel;
<br />mildly alkaline; clear, smooth boundarryy
<br />IIC-35 to 60 inches, very ppale brown (lOYR 7/a) gravelly
<br />sand, brown (lOYR 6/3) when moist; single grained;
<br />~- loose; nonsticky end nonplaatic; 20 percent grsvel; eal-
<br />y careous; moderately alkaline.
<br />Gravel makes up 6 to 25 percent of the A and B horizons
<br />and 15 to 35 percent of the IIC horizon. The Al horizon
<br />is 3 to S~inches thick. The B2t horizon is 30 to 30 inches
<br />~ thick. In places a prominent horizon of lime aeeumulation
<br />is below the H2t horizon. Depth to the IIC horizon ranges
<br />from 24 to 40 inches.
<br />GcA-Gilcrest sandy loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes.
<br />This soil is on ]ow alluvia] terraces along streams. The
<br />areaB-are elongated and cover as much as 800 acres.
<br />+'rtihis soil has the profile described as representative of
<br />the series.
<br />Included with this soil in mapping are areas of
<br />Baakard sand, generally along the drainageways. These
<br />areas make up less than 10 percent of the acreage,
<br />Runoff is slow, and the hazard of water erosion is
<br />Sligbt, but the hazard of soil blowing is high. The soil is
<br />subject to occasional brief flooding.
<br />- This soil is used for grazing. The native vegetation
<br />js mainly blue grams, sand dropseed, rabbitbruah, cane
<br />cactus, and wild buckwheat. Capability unit VIe-3, non-
<br />, irrigated ;Sandy Plains range site.

<br />GeI)`Gllcresl gravelly sandy loam, 3 to 9 percent
<br />elopes. This soil is mostly on the top of mesas. The areas
<br />are irregular in shape and cover as much as 1,800 acres.
<br />This soil has a profile similar to the one described ea
<br />representative of the series, but the surface layer is
<br />gravelly sandy loam. Also, the layer of clay accumula-
<br />tion is about 10 inches thick and about 26 percent of
<br />it is gravel. Beneath that is a prominent, but discon-
<br />tinuous, layer of lime accumulation about 9 inches
<br />thick that is about 36 percent gravel. The underlying
<br />material is gravelly loamy sand or gravelly sand that
<br />is about lb percent gravel.
<br />Included with this soil in mapping are areas of
<br />Schamber gravelly sandy loam. These included soils are
<br />in steeper areas and make up about 15 percent of the
<br />acreage.
<br />Runoff is slow, and the hazard of water erosion is
<br />slight.
<br />This soil is used for grazing. The native vegetation
<br />is mainly blue grams, side-oats grams, sand dropseed,
<br />needlegrass, sand sage, yucca, and buckwheat, Capa-
<br />bility unit VIe-3, nonirrigated; Sandy Plains range
<br />site.
<br />GfC-Gilcrest complex, 3 to 6 percent slopes. This
<br />complex is on fans at the foot of mesas in the northern
<br />part of the survey area. It is made up of about fi0
<br />percent Gilcrest sandy loam and of 15 percent soils
<br />that are similar to Gilcrest sandy loam but are underlain
<br />by shale at a depth of 20 to 40 inches. Areas of this
<br />complex are elongated and have concave slopes.
<br />The Gilcrest soil in this complex has a profile similar
<br />to the one described as representative of the.Gilcreat
<br />series, but it has less gravel and coarse sand.
<br />Included with these soils in mapping are areas of
<br />Schamber gravelly sandy loam that make up about 10
<br />percent of the acreage and areas of Razor clay loam
<br />that make up about 6 percent. The Schamber soils are
<br />on narrow ridges and steeper side slopes, and the Razor
<br />soils are on ridges and small knobs.
<br />Runoff is slow, and the hazard of water erosion is '
<br />slight.
<br />These soils are used for grazing. The native vegeta-
<br />tion is mainly blue grams, gaileta, sand dropseed, cane
<br />cactus, vucca, and sand sage. Capability unit VIe~,
<br />nonirrigated ;Sandy Plains range site.
<br />Glenberg Series
<br />The Glenberg series consists of deep, well-drained
<br />soils. These soils formed on flood plains in loamy allu-
<br />vium. The slope is 0 to 2 percent, and elevation is 4,300
<br />to 4,800 feet. The average annual precipitation is 12
<br />inches. The average annual temperature is 63° F, and
<br />the frost-free season is 146 to 176 days. The native .
<br />vegetation is mainly plains grasses.
<br />In a representative profile the surface layer is light
<br />brownish-gray fine sandy loam about 6 inches thick.
<br />Below that is pale-brown fine sandy loam stratified
<br />with loamy fine Band and loam that extends to a depth
<br />of 60 inches or more.
<br />Permeability is moderately rapid, and the available
<br />water capacity is moderate. These soils are moderately
<br />alkaline. Their root zone extends to a depth of more
<br />
