.:
' reclamtion -2- January 10, 1986
easier seeding and mulching. The area should be scarified, if practical,
to a depth of 6 inches to permit better bonding between the topsoil and the
underlying soil material. After scarification, the topsoil should be uni-
formly spread over the area.
4. A soil test should be performed to determine the proper fertilizer require-
ment. In lieu of a soil test, fertilize the entire gravel pit with 40
pounds per acre each of available elemental nitrogen (N) and phosphoric
acid (P 0 ). The fertilizer must be incorporated into the top 2 or 3
inches of5soil using a disk or harrow implement. Fertilizer should be applied
immediately prior to seeding, or at the time of seeding.
~. Soils that have been overcompacted by traffic and equipment should be tilled
to break up rooting restrictive layers, harrowed and then rolled or packed
to prepare the required firm seedbed. The seedbed should be well settled
and Eirm, but friable enough that seed can be placed at the recommended
seeding depth. The ideal fizmness is when a one-half inch boot print is
left after walking across the soil surface.
6. Kecommended varities and seeding rates:
Species Variety Mix Percentage Drilled Seed Rate(PLS*/Ac)
western wheatgrass Arriba 30 4.8
sideoats grams Vaughn or Niner 30 2.7
alkali sacaton 20 .3
,and dropseed 10 .1
/ellow sweetclaver 10 .7
fourwing saltbush - .5
'Chis mix is adapted to the site, will provide adequate ground cover protect-
ion, and will provide wildlife habitat.
*seed rates are given in pounds of Pure Live Seed (PLS)
PLS = purity x germination
7. Seeding should be done using a grass drill. The drill should be equipped
with a satisfactory seeding mechanism, agitator, double disk furrow openers,
depth bands, and packer wheels or drag chains. The distance between drill
rows should not exceed 12 inches. Broadcasting the seed can be done in
areas which are inaccessible for drilling. If the seed is broadcasted,
then the above seeding rates should be doubled. The broadcasted seeds should
be uniformly distributed over the ground surface, and mixed into the soil
with a harrow or by hand raking. Planting can be done anytime between
November 1 and April 30. Seeding should not be done when the soil is frozen.
The seeds should be planted between 1/4 and 3/4 inch deep.
8. htuleh should be applied to the reseeded area to help moderate soil tempera-
tures, and to improve soil moisture absorption and holding capacity. Grass
hay or cereal grain straw free of weed seed is recommended. Apply 4000
