INSPECTION REPORT
Site: National King Coal Mine, Hesperus, Colorado
Inspected By: Don R. May, P.E., Project Engineer
Inspection Date: Quarterly Inspection January, 2007, (4"' Qtr
Ponds: Photograph 1 shows the snow covered west pond. The inlets, outlets and
embankments of both ponds were inspected and appear in good condition but snow
cover preludes detailed examination.
4rainaoe Ditches: The drainage channels, on the north and south sides of the waste
pile, appear in good general condition. All other drainage d~annels on the site were
inspected and are in good condition. Again snow cover makes dose inspection difficult.
The drainage in and around the upper and lower yams is working well and both are in
good shape. Care should be taken to keep all of the pipe inlets clear of sediment and
debris. Except where noted, all drainage features have been constructed and are
operating as stated in the drainage plan submitted to the Division of Minerals and
Geology.
Coal Waste Pile: The upper portion of the waste pile (above the road) appears stable
and in good condition. The lower portion of the pile face is also stable but does have
some tilling which is probably due to the over steeping at the toe. The design
modification for the toe of the waste pile that was suggested in the previous inspection
reports has been constructed. Photograph 2 shows the concrete block wall at the toe of
the slope. This should help slow the erosion on the lower portion of the waste pile face.
A second course of concrete blocks would raise the wall to the elevation of the
surrounding toe and eliminate the near vertical drop seen just above the existing wall.
The top of the pile is in good condition and is shown in photograph 3. Drainage on top of
the pile and along access road up the face and around the pile is working well with no
signs of undo erosion.
Eiccept for the items mentioned above the fill on the waste pile has been constructed as
spedfied in the design approved by the Division of Minerals and Geology.
