or more culturally modified objects not found in the context of a site as defined above. All
cultural resources such as open camps, lithic scatters, historic structures, and isolated fmds
were recorded as they were encountered to standards set by the BLM and the OAHP.
Sites were recorded using the following methods of mapping and note taking.
Mapping of site boundaries, and the locafion of individual tools, features, and IFs was
conducted using a BLM certified Trimble GeoExpiorer XT GPS unit. Site boundaries were
determined by the extent of surface artifacts and/or a protective buffer wne. One crew
member would map, while the other members took photographs and notes regazding the
sites' soil, vegetation, topography, geology, and cultural resources. Field notes and photo
negatives aze on file at Grand River Institute, while the photographs have been submitted to
the BLM and the USFS. Two artifacts were collected and will be curated at the Museum of
Western Colorado, a BLM curation facility in Grand Junction.
Study Findings
This portion of the report describes the findings and presents a discussion of site
significance evaluation, and provides a listing of the isolated finds. The field conditions were
poor. Dense vegetation and steep slopes made the survey, and the location of sites, difficult,
however, as expected, cultural resources were encountered. Previously recorded sites
SDT1326, SGN4231 (prehistoric open camps), SGN266 (a site with both prehistoric and
historic components), SGN254 (the Oliver Mine), SGN1494 (an historic survey marker), and
SGN1560 (the cemetery portion of the town of Somerset) were revisited. Site SGN4232 was
not revisited because it did not fall into one of the defined survey areas. Sites SDT 1326 and
SGN4231 had been initially field evaluated as need data and the current revisit supports these
recommendations. Attempts to relocated SGN266, based upon the original site description,
maps, and photographs, were unsuccessful and therefore the original evaluation of need data
remams unchanged. Historic sites SGN1494 and SGN1560 were initially evaluated as not
eligible (SGN1494) and eligible (SGN1560) and the current study supports these findings.
Site SGN1560, the town of Somerset, falls outside the project area with the exception of the
town cemetery. Accordingly, only the cemetery was revisited and reevaluated.
In addition, two prehistoric sites (SGN4724 and SGN4725), two historic sites
(SDT1607 and SGN4726) and 23 isolated finds (IFs) were newly identified and recorded.
The UTM data for the reevaluated and aewly recorded cultural resources is found in
Appendix B, Table B-3. Figures B-1 through B-4 in that appendix are maps that show the
reevaluated and newly recorded sites and isolated find locations in relation to the various
project areas. Detailed information for the resources is provided in Appendix C: OAHP Site
and Isolated Find Forms (available at the BLM and OAHP).
8
