COLORADO DEPARTMENT GF PUBLIC HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT
WATER QUALITY CONTROL DIVISION
WATER QUALITY PROTECTION SECTION
GROUND-WATER °ERl`4IT GUIDANCE
SUC-vESTED MONITORING WELL SAMPLING PROTOCOL
A. 1.~t.F..f+.uUREl1~iE\'T OF' STATIC LYAT.`~R LET~L
Permittee is to either: (1) obtain static water level measurements at each well with an eieotrortic wzter Level indicator,
such as that manufactured by Slope Indicator, Solinst, M-scone, Geotechnicallnstrumeat5, etc. with a description of
the instrument and its specifications as Attachment I to this protocol; or (2) other acceptable methods of deu°.tmining
the static water level such as a "popper" or a steel rape with a weight. The well shall not be pumped during
measurement of static water IeveL Water level measurements shall be determined from z surveyed meastring point at
the top of the protective casing, thereby eliminating the need to compensate for the "casing stick-up". The water
Levels will be measured with ut accuracy of 0.01 feet. The measuring point is to be re-surveyed once per yeaz to
ensure accuracy of water elevation.
1. The water level indicator cable and probe ("popper" or steel tape w{weight) shzll reouire decontamination before
each use. Procedures to decontaminate the instrument shall be as follows:
a. Weaz new and clean disposable doves.
b. Saturate a clean, lint free paper towel in halves with an Alconox-potable water mix on oneratf and aistilied
water on the other half.
c. Wipe the cable as the probe ("popper" or steel tape w/weight) is rewound onto the spool with the paper towel
allowing the alconox saturated half to come in contact with the cable first.
d Place ?a`:e pace: towel untie: the probe ("copper" or steel tone w/wei~ktt) to catch :rose fuids. Rinse probe
("popper" or steel tape w{weight) with alconox-water mix, followed by a final rinse with distilled water.
e. Properly dispose of all used gloves and pane: [owes.
_. The method by which the water level data will be acquired is as follows:
a. New and clean disposable gloves will be wpm.
b. Water levels wi11'oe measured from the measurng point at each well. The measur~*tg point is located on the
top of the ,2eei protective cosine (surface casing). The elevation, relative to mean sea level, of the measuring
point ;Ital] have been determined by utilizing iota] bench marks and survey instruments.
c. The "casing stick-up" will be measured on a quaneriy basis. Any change in height of the steel cosine above
ground sutiace (stick-up) sh all be noted in the operator's logbook. If the distance changes more Than 0.04 feet
requires that the ce.~rtiree have the measuring point ,-e-surveyed b verify accuracy cf static water elevations.
d The sampler's name, t*.e date and the time of measurement shall'oe recorded in a logbook or monitorno form.
e. 1 he depth to water to the nearer 0.01 foot wall be measured by lowering the water level probe ("popper" or
steal tape w/weight) into the well.
f. The total depth ot'the well shall be recorded for each well in the operator's logbook on a quarterly basis.
