This letter summarizes our findings, and
our inspection report is enclosed.
The Bear No. 3 Mine is an inactive facility. Wastewater is generated from stormwater control and
mine seepage.
Wastewater discharges from these facilities are regulated under CDPS Permit #CO-0044377. The
Division administratively extended this permit on January 31, 2001. There aze two permitted
outfalls.
• Outfall 001 follows a settling pond for groundwater drainage from old mine portals. This
outfall flows on a continuous basis. It was dischazging coffee-colored water during our
inspection, and it was observed discharging the same type of water on August 3, 2000.
Facility monitoring records indicate a continuous dischazge as well. Outfa11001 is located at
38° 54.05 north, 107° 36.88 west.
• Outfa11004 follows a settling pond for surface runoff from the mine. This outfall has not
discharged in the past 2 years. It is located at 38° 54.26 north, 107° 37.06 west.
Outfalls 001 and 004 are for the industrial wastewater treatment system. These facilities are not
operated by a Class D industrial wastewater treatment operator, as required by Section 100.6.2 of the
Reeu]ation.
Facility conditions are accurately reflected by the current permit, with the exception of Item 4 below.
C:\d\P.APROl\Gt JNNISON\04437701 Beaz No. 3 Mine IW W Inspection in Apri12002.doc
Apri125, 2002 Page 1 of 3 Mike Havens
