43
• Tracts 8, 13, and 14
Environment
These three tracts are discussed in a fashion similar to Tracts 1,
3, 4, and 6, since they also share contiguous boundaries or are located
extremely close to one another (Fig. 5). Tracts 8 and 13 share a common
boundary while Tract 14 is located directly east of Tract 13, across
the Williams Fork River. Environmentally, there is no significant dif-
ference among the three tracts, although Tract 14 has somewhat more mois-
ture available and supports a lusher vegetative growth in some places.
Tracts 8 and 13 lie entirely on Iles Fountain, a block of sedimentary
deposits which dips to the north and has an. east-west strike. The southern
end of the block forms an escarpment and a part of the north rim of the
• Axial Basin. The tracts are bounded on the east by the Williams Fork
River and on the west by Milk Creek. Both flow north into the Yampa
River. The southern boundary of Tract 8 is slightly north of the drain-
age divide; consequently, the major drainages within the tract flow north-
ward.
Iles Mountain is similar to the mountain masses on which the more
easterly tracts lie. The mountain has a long,
running into the Yampa River Valley, and steep
eastern portion, in which Tract 13 is located,
formed in part by an entrenched meander of the
and by the Williams Fork River valley on the e
gentle north-facing slope
south-facing slopes. The
is a high narrow ridge
Yampa River on the west side
3s t.
Tract 13 is quite rugged, with steep grassy slopes on the east side
and extensive sandstone outcroppings on the west. Tract 8, in contrast
• to the above, is almost entirely situated on the gentle north slope,
