A lost 19, 1994, Vl'astern Fuels~olorado, LLC, discharged an <br />unknown qua~,tity anc qua!iry o` mina water from the permit area. The discharge <br />r•rrurrad during a severe thunderstorm cn August 19, 1934 at approximately 3.15 <br />p.m.. The storm produced 1.25 inches of rainfa!I in approximately forty minutes. <br />The r_.irfall was so ~~r,tense and fast that it filled the drainage ditches and culverts to <br />r,.parity. There was nna corn: m the drai,-~age system were excess mine water [water <br />that rzn across the s~,,rfiace of disturbed landi breac^ed over a perimeter road and a <br />dit_h, leaving the mine permit, and fioca'ing into L'alamity Draw. The unauthorized discharge lasted 2pproximately 15 <br />minu~as, white the existir•.g witch and culve,^v system cleared themselves tc a sediment <br />pcnd..4 water sample of the unauthorized discharge was not collected due to heavy <br />thunde,^ a^d lighting activity in the immediate area. The discharge water did not contain <br />ar~y petroleum, or chemical matter. The petroleum storage area was bermed and <br />desig".ed fora ^ ~, yr - 24 hr event (2.00 inchesj, sr_ this'r~as not a problem during this <br />storm. <br />1VFC s;.arted work imme::iately, at 4:00 p.m. on August 19 to clean up and start <br />corrective action from the stow:. Work continued through Saturday any Sunday and <br />is continuing as of t~,is date. WFC is enlarging the ditches beyond the 25 year - 24 <br />hear rainfall averts criteria that Colorado Department of Minerals and Gecingy requires. <br />YJFC is also chec:ung and correcting all culverts to see they will function properly for <br />the next even;.
