Places and People visited: We met with Merritt Denison Superintendent, Fire
Mountain Canal and Reservoir Company, Trey Denison, Ditch Rider, Fire
Mountain Canal and Reservoir Company, and William (Bill) Bear, Jr., Mine
Manager, Bowie Resources, Ltd (Bowie Resources), along "old" highway 133
near a settling pond located uphill of the Fire Mountain Canal.
Purpose of the trip: John Ozga and Bob Major were asked by Kathleen Ozga,
to look into reported discharges from a mine settling pond into the Fire Mountain
Canal (FMC).
Kathleen reported that Merritt Denison had called her about discharges into the
FMC from a settling pond owned by Bowie Resources. These discharges have
happened over the last 2-3 weeks and continued even though Merritt had talked
to representatives for Bowie Resources about the issue. It was also reported
that an employee for Delta County has taken a sample of the discharge, as well
as some photos, and will have the sample tested.
Fire Mountain Canal and Reservoir Company operates and maintains the FMC
and the North Fork Water Conservancy District has a repayment contract with
the Bureau of Reclamation that covers the work on the FMC as well as Paonia
Dam.
