Deer Trail Ditch:
Concerns
• The Deer Trail Ditch does not have the capacity to handle its normal flow plus the
potential Mine-related dischazges. In addition, there exists excess vegetation and other
possible blockages in the ditch.
• When the Deer Trail Ditch is overtopped due to lack of capacity through the Mine
vicinity, that excess flow ends up in the Canal almost immediately. This is
unacceptable.
• Discharges ofMine-affected water from the Deer Trail Ditch would adversely affect the
quality of water in the Canal and could potentially damage the Canal.
Recommendations:
• Clean out, enlazge, and maintain the Deer Trail Ditch to ensure its capacity to handle
additional discharges from the Mine.
• To the fullest extent possible, control releases from Ponds B, C, D, and F so that the
capacity of the Deer Trail Ditch is not exceeded.
• Remove or plug all points of dischazge from the Deer Trail Ditch to the Canal along the
Mine-affected reach of the ditch.
In summary, Reclamation cannot accept storm water dischazges into our facilities and we
aze required to investigate and eliminate all unauthorized discharges. We ask that you
keep us informed regazding any changes or modifications to the Mine's dischazge permit
or designs to settlement ponds or other facilities at the Mine that may affect the Canal.
Since the Mine's dischazges involve a federal facility, we request that you respond in
writing to our concerns and recommendations.
In the meantime, if you have any questions or need additional information, please contact
Kathleen Ozga at (970) 248-0649 or Bob Major at (970) 248-0613.
Sincerely,
Ed Warner
Resources Division Manager
Enclosures
