2.0 Field Work
Field work was carried out by SubTerra, Inc. personnel between June 26, 1994 and July
2, 1994. The objectives of this work were to provide data on slope morphology, surface
characteristics, and block-size frequency-distribution, and also to verify the structural
assessment presented by SAIC in their 1992 report.
Specific tasks, which were carried out concurrently, included;
• mapping of slope morphology and surface characteristics, including slope
breaks, soil and vegetation type, and man-made features.
• compilation of a boulder catalog containing details of blocks from earlier
falls including location, approximate dimensions, source area (if
determinable), and failure mode (if determinable).
• review of SAIC stereographic projection data.
• scanline mapping to assess the spacing of the various discontinuity sets
present.
Features were recorded in the field on 1" to 200' ortho-photographs provided by
Twentymile Coal Company, and were located on the photographs by direct inspection, or
by intersection of compass bearings. The accuracy of the resulting plots is consistent with
these methods.
2.1 Slope Morphological Mapping
Morphological features were recorded to supplement Twentymile Coal Company's 1" to
200' topographic mapping and to aid in developing CRSP models. Features of interest
included upper and lower breaks of slope, cliff base and crest lines, and man-made
features such as levelled areas, drainage ditches, and cat roads.
