. GE.`'EIL~L E.~~2OV~LE.\~I'AL Lr-F'OR~L~ITION <br />The Class II survey area is located on the western edge of Gunnison County, Colorado near the <br />town of Somerset. The following environmental information is taken from the West Elk Mine <br />permit application. The study azea lies on the norrh facing slopes of near Jumbo'vlountain and <br />falls within the North Fork of the Gunnison River drainage basin. Average annual precipitation <br />along the North Fork of the Gunnison River is approximately 10", most of which falls as snow. <br />The majority of Lhe azea is covered with mixed tall (1 m - 3 m) shrub vegetation consisting <br />mainly of Gambol oak (auercus oambelii) and Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifoiia). <br />Aspen, dry meadows, and Douglas fir also aze found in the study area. Currently the area is <br />used for grazing by domestic livestock and deer and elk. Big game hunting does occur in the <br />area. <br />Slope ranges from 0 to 60 percent in the study area. Elevations range from 5960' to 6930'. <br />Soil mapping units have been described as Absazokee-Work Loams (6 to 2~ percent slopes), <br />Fughes Loams (15 to 65 percent slopes), Fughes-Aurecanti Stony Loam (10 to 40 percent <br />( sIopes), and Torriorthents-Rock Outcrop, Sandstone. <br /> <br /> <br />5 <br />
