Often dry years come in sequences of 2 or 3 years at a time
• separated by 2 to 4 years of normal to above normal precipitation. Other
years tend to vary around the mean. Very dry years occur about every
10 to 12 years. From the records it can be assumed that the next 2 to 3
years will be normal or above normal in precipitation but after then will
decline to a minimum in about 5 or 6 years. During the next 2 to 3 years
it can be assumed precipitation will be between 14.0 and 17.5 inches per
year. These projections, however, must be understood to be extrapolations
and may not hold strictly true. The probability, however, is high this
pattern will be observed. Therefore, the next five years will probably
be reasonably favorable for revegetation, but after that moisture stress
will severely impact established vegetation.
The foregoing analysis applies strictly to Colorado Springs.
• The Pikeview Quarry differs considerably from Colorado Springs.
Geographically the site is between Colorado Springs and Monument, although
probably more similar in climate to Colorado Springs than Monument.
Monument receives about 4 to 5 inches more precipitation than
Colorado Springs and has an annual average temperature of about 3°F less.
Some of this rather great difference over such a short distance can be
attributed to the about 1200 feet difference in elevation between the
recording stations. Most of the difference occurs because of the proximity
of the Palmer Lake Divide to the town of Monument. This divide is noted
for its weather producing ability and has a great influence on the climate
of the entire area from Castle Rock to Colorado Springs and from the
mountain front east for about 40 to 50 miles.
After examining these data a reasonably accurate projection of
~. the climate of the Pikeview Quarry can be derived. On the average the
Pikeview Quarry would be about 3°F cooler than Colorado Springs due to
P-K-3
