EXPLANATORY ADDENDUM
EXHIBIT J
VEGETATION
PIKEVIEW QUARRY 77-211
G. Exhibit J - Vegetation
1) P-J-1 - Please state the percent density of the native
plant communities.
RESPONSE G1. Percent density is an ambiguous term without
much ecological meaning. Density is a measure of number of units
per unit area and cannot meaningfully be expressed directly as a
percentage. The estimated percent cover of the vegetation varies
considerably with the location. The shrub areas have an average
of 458 crown cover by shrubs and an average of 808 cover of the
ground story. Northslope forests have crown covers that vary from
308 to 758 and a ground story cover of about 408 due mostly to
shading, acid soil, and droughty soil conditions produced by root
competition. South facing slopes range from 158 to 208 up to
about 708 depending on the rock content of the soil and the slope. On
south facing slopes there is no appreciable shrub cover as the
shrubs and trees are scattered.
2) Since such diverse vegetation communities exist, this
information should be portrayed on a vegetation map.
RESPONSE G2. Vegetation communities as complex as these
cannot possibly be represented on a map which displays static, visually
or mathematically determined units. A map cannot display vegetation
dynamics. A map is supplied showing the principal visual units in
• Exhibit J1.
P-J-S*
