Khite Engineering Associates, Inc.
Report M1o. 79:19-D June 18, 1979
Utah International, Inc. Page 2
'~ completely in 69 milliseconds, and Blast 2 detonated completely in 60
milliseconds. By contrast, a blast of similar size monitored in September,
1977, required more than 1000 milliseconds to detonate.
Instrument Stations
Prior to our visit, several telephone conversations with Atr. Haanes
served to make preliminary station selections. These preliminary sites were
charged by minor degrees due to terrain considerations and accessibility. A
sketch map shows the approximate instrument positions in relation to the two
blasts.
Instruments
The instruments provided for this study were three component velocity
type seismographs. The sensing elements of these instruments are standard
moving coil seismometers of which three are mounted in mutually perpendicular
directions in a single case to provide a triaxial sensor.
`-' ~ All but one.of the instruments provided respond equally to all signals
in the frequency range from 1-200 Hertz. The single exception was the instrument
located at Station 4 (Okie Plaza), which responds flat to all signals in the
range from 10-200 Hertz. Appropriate correction for low frequency was applied
to the measurements obtained at this station.
The instruments located at Stations 2, 4, S, 7 and 8B were continuous
recording instruments that continuously measure the three components of ground
motion and record the peak as a bar graph on a pressure sensitive chart. All
other stations were equipped with full waveform seismographs that magnetically
record a time history of the effects.
The transcribed recordings from these instruments and copies of the
bar graph charts are attached to this report.
The manufacturers specifications on the:.instruments used are also
attached.
Monitoring the Effects and teasurements
During the morning of ,lanuary ]0, 1979, site inspections and individual
recording assignments were made, and a plan was developed to conduct the
L-2
