• Groundwater Uses.
Only one registered well lies in the Bolton Draw Drainage.
This well, belonging to Kerr Coal Co., is located in the SE: of
Section 35, T9N, R78W. Filed under Permit No. 02053-F, the well
has an assigned appropriation of 3 ac ft/yr and a maximum pumping
rate of 15 gpm. Water from the well is used for sanitation at
the Kerr Mine.
Wyoming Fuel Company has received approval to install a well
in the SW~SW; of Section 2, TBN, R78W. This well will also be used
for sanitation at the Canadian Strip Mine. Permission to drill this
well was granted by the Colorado Division of Water Resources under
Permit No. 117184. This well has been assigned an appropriation of
4 ac ft/yr with a maximum pumping rate of 15 gpm.
Groundwater Quality.
• The results of the groundwater quality as analyzed from monitor
wells in the Pit 2 area as well as in the reclaimed spoil area are
found at the end of this Appendix. These analyses indicate that
the prevalent type of groundwater found within the strata to be
mined is of sodium bicarbonate type. This is true for all wells
except Well 4C which is of sodium hydroxide type. Large percentages
of sodium sulfate type water also exist in Wells 4A, 6C and in Well
7. The water in Well 7 is about half sodium bicarbonate and half
sodium sulfate. This well is a good indicator of the resultant
groundwater chemistry that is likely to be found in the reclaimed
spoil areas.
The high sodium concentrations in the groundwater are most
likely directly tied to the high sodium levels exhibited by the
overburden and underburden. As with the SAR values in the overburden
and underburden, the groundwater quality with respect to sodium is
greatest in the vicinity of the nose of the anticline and decreases
• northward on both flanks.
-68-
