mineable thickness values listed in Table 6. Exhibit C-9 is a <br />• sample electric log for hole LM1-1 and is an example of this <br />interpretation. To convert the drilled mineable thickness values <br />to true mineable thickness values, the dip was determined at each <br />hole location from the structure map, and the cosine of the dip <br />angle multiplied by the drilled thickness. <br />As can be determined by the Sudduth Coal Isopach Map, the <br />seam is extremely variable in thickness around the nose of the <br />anticline. The coal changes in thickness from less than ten feet <br />thick to about thirty feet thick. Consequently, the strip ratios <br />are also rapidly variable and in certain areas are too great to <br />allow economic recovery of the coal even adjacent to the subcrop. <br />This is especially true along the east flank between the nose of <br />the anticline and the faulted region south of Pit 1. Here the <br />coal is generally less than ten feet thick along the subcrop side <br />and dips much more steeply than on the nose of the structure, <br />making the average strip ratio too great for present economic <br />• recovery. <br />The reason for the variable nature of the Sudduth Coal thick- <br />ness is unknown. It could be the result of depositional conditions, <br />paleo-erosional circumstances or even structural conditions. <br />Possibly it is a result of a combination of these conditions. The <br />relative poorer quality of the lower portion of the coal, however, <br />is almost certainly the result of the depositional environment. <br />Overburden Characteristics <br />Methodology. <br />For the Pit 2 area, two holes (LM1B-4 and LM2C-5) were <br />selected as representative of the typical lithologies to be <br />encountered during overburden removal. Both of the holes also <br />. sample the strata immediately below the Sudduth Coal. These holes <br />are located approximately 1700 feet apart and are located near or <br />-31- <br />
