• Geologic maps illustrating the Sudduth Coal structure,
overburden and thickness within and adjacent to Pit 1 are enclosed
as Exhibits C-SA, C-6A, and C-7A, respectively, at the end of this
Appendix.
Coal Analyses.
The quality of the Sudduth Coal Seam in the vicinity of Pit 1
has been established by U.S. Geological Survey core holes, Wyoming
Fuel Company core holes, and by extensive sampling of coal shipped
from the Canadian Strip Mine. Table 2 is a summary of coal analyses
for the Sudduth Seam from U.S.G.S. Hole J6B, Wyoming Fuel Company
Hole lA, a U.S.G.S. channel sample from the Canadian Strip Mine and
representative mine run analyses taken by Consolidation Coal
Company and Wyoming Fuel Company from the coal shipped. The
proximate analyses listed are on the "as received" basis and include
precent moisture, percent ash, percent volatile matter, percent
fixed carbon, BTU per pound and the percent sulfur.
•
Analyses of the sulfur forms are also included to designate
the percentages of pyritic, sulfate and organic sulfur in the total.
Since Marcasite is a dimorph or pyrite (Fe52) and is chemically
equivalent, it is included in the pyritic fraction of the total
sulfur. A separate breakdown of the marcasite content can only be
accomplished through petrographic examination. Because the compound
is chemically equivalent to pyrite, such analysis is not considered
necessary since the pyritic component as well as the total sulfur
percentage is so minimal.
Overburden Characteristics
Hole 1, drilled by Wyoming Fuel Company was selected as the
location for overburden sampling because it is approximately near
the center of the lease area and it was drilled to a depth well
below the bottom of the Sudduth Coal Seam. In selecting this one
• hole, Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Land
-Z1-
