• GEOLOGY OF PIT 1 - FEDERAL COAL LEASE NO C-27931
Stratigraphy, Structures and Coal Geology
During December, 1979, Wyoming Fuel Company drilled three
holes on federal land immediately south of the original Canadian
Strip Mine. The holes were drilled under Temporary Use Permit No.
CO-010-TU-80-B prior to the issuance of Federal Coal Lease No.
C-27931. Two of the holes are within the present permit boundary
and one hole lies immediately southwest. These holes were drilled
for the purpose of installing water monitoring stations necessary
for observing the effect of subsequent mining operations on water
quality and quantity. The United States Geological Survey also
drilled two holes, both o£ which lie outside the present permit area
to the west. These holes were drilled for the purpose of evaluating
the coal resource south of the original Canadian Strip Mine pit.
• Upon issuance of Federal Coal Lease C-27931 (March 20, 1980),
Wyoming Fuel Company conducted additional exploration drilling which
resulted in the discovery that significantly less coal was recoverable
on the lease than was previously indicated. Table 1 lists the drill
hole data for all holes falling within Federal Coal Lease No. C-27431.
Lithologic descriptions from holes that are utilized in compil-
ing cross sections through the permit area are found at the end of
this Appendix. Electric logs for these same holes are also included.
Three cross sections were drawn through the permit area (see
Exhibit C-3). Section A-A' is along strike and Sections B-B' and
C-C' are along dip. The cross sections demonstrate the relative
discontinuity of the Sudduth Coal in the Pit 1 area. Numerous and
highly interbedded lithologies can be designated in the permit
area above the Sudduth Coal. These lithologies are outlined on
Exhibit C-3, along with the cross sections. The locations
of the cross sections can be found on Exhibit C-2.

-7-
