Received
APR 1 11998
TO: Planning Commission Durango Field Office
Division of Minerals & Geology
FROM: Joanne Williams
RE: Decision, Whinnery gravel pit application on Highway 149
DATE: August 2, 1996
At its regular meeting of August 16, 1996, Planning Commission member Les
White motioned to approve the following decision of No Impact. Seconded by Mike
Petersen and the motion passed unanimously.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Helen Whinnery has applied to extend a gravel extraction operation permit
originally approved for Popejoy Construction by the County in 1992. The Popejoy
permit allowed athree-year operation, specifically to provide gravel to improvements
to Colorado Highway 149. Because for extract gravel from a 9.9 acre site eleven
miles north of Lake City, adjacent to Colorado Highway 149. The site is currently
part of an operating ranch, and will be reclaimed for range purposes once the project
is completed. The site is located in Secs. 35 and 36, R. 46 N, Twn. 4 W, 10th P.M.,
approximately 150 feet above the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River.
Extraction, crushing and hatching would be allowed on the property to provide
materials for highway projects, as intended by the original permit, and as might
conducted by the Colorado Department of Transportation. A berm ringing the pit
area is designed to prevent off-site drainage.
No water is required for the extraction operation, other than that to be hauled
in for employee consumption.
Because the initial operation was for a DOT project, no specific access permit
was issued to the applicant, who will be required to secure one.
1711~Ca: ~~_\:i I ~ CAF
A public hearing was conducted August 2, 1996.
