DRAFT
3.13 SLURRY AND BACKFILL
Testing requirements for slurry and backfill are as follows (and aze outlined in Table 1):
A. Materials
1. Bentonite: Certification of compliance with the specifications shall be obtained from the
material manufacturer.
2. Backfill Mix: Backfill material shall be tested prior to placement in the trench by conducting
tests to determine slump and gradation. Testing frequency will be as directed by the Engineer
with a minimum of one series of tests per 300 cubic yards of backfill material prepared for
introduction in the trench.
B. Slury Introduced in the Trench
A complete series of tests shall be conducted on slurry from the pond containing slurry ready for
introduction in the trench at least once per shift or each time a pond is prepared. The tests shall
include:
pH of the slurry,
Unit weight of the slurry,
Viscosity of the slurry.
C. Slurryinthe Trench
Slurry in the trench shall be tested at least once per shift. Samples shall be obtained from near the
bottom of the trench near the point of trenching and tested for unit weigh[, sand content, and filtrate
loss.
3.14 COLD WEATHER CONSTRUCTION
Special provisions are required for slurry management and backfill when the air temperatures drop below 32 °
F.
A. Ice forming on the surface of the trench slurry shall be excavated and cast aside each morning prior to
beginning digging or backfilling.
B. Supplemental fines stockpiles shall be stripped of snow, ice, and frozen materials prior to beginning
mixing or backfilling operations.
C. Backfill containing snow, ice, frozen materials, or frost shall not be placed in the trench
END OF SECTION
7/04 Section 02168 -Page 5 of 5
