CHAPTER I
• .GENERAL INFORMATION
PROJECT SITE MAP
The Project Site and Service Area Map is enclosed in the envelope at the
back of the Appendix.
PROJECT LOCATION
The Minnesota Dam is located within the Gunnison National Forest in
Gunnison County. The dam is approximately 8 miles east-northeast of the
Town of Paonia at an elevation of 7,325 feet above sea level. Access to
the Dam is by way of a forest service access road. The Minnesota Dam is
also known locally as the Monument Reservoir. The "Design" section of this
report makes reference to the Monument Reservoir. Please be assured that
the structures are one and the same.
CLIMATE
The climate in Paonia is similar to other mountainous areas in the Colorado
Rockies, being continental in character, and is typified by wide seasonal
and daily variations in temperature. Occasionally, temperature changes are
sudden and extreme. Daily summer maximums are frequently above 90°F with
minimums near 50°F. A 20°F temperature range is common during the winter
•
I-1
