• the UTL well is well beyond the expected range for a sandstone and is likely due to fracturing of
the Rollins Sandstone. Regional fracturing has been reported in this portion of the Piceance Basin
(Collins, 1996). The fracturing appears to extend to the outcrop of the Rollins at the Colorado
River. As a result water from the Colorado River and the associated alluvium is likely transmitted
along the localized fracturing to the extent of the UTL well. Based upon the volume of water
encountered within the UTL well and the reported inflows into the Roadside North Mine, it would
appear that the fracturing is discontinuous and does not fully extend to the mine.
Well potential for domestic purposes based upon transmissivities encountered in the N-Decline and
the RSS wells is characterized as poor. However, well potential based upon the transmissivity of
the UTL well would be greater. However, well potential for the UTL well is based solely on the
available water as influenced by the Colorado River.
The Rollins Sandstone cannot be considered an aquifer based upon the results of aquifer testing
of the RSS well and the N-Decline well. Insufficient quantities of water are produced for beneficial
use in these two locations. Additionally, even though aquifer testing of the RSN well was not
possible, during groundwater sampling slow recharge was noted suggestive of similar
transmissivities to that of the RSS and N-Decline wells. The water encountered in the UTL well
is anomalous and is influenced by localized fracturing and subsequent influence from the Colorado
River.
•
Table 2
Aquifer Characteristics
Hydraulic
Transmissivity Conductivity Potential
(T) (K) Pumping Rate
Well ID gal/day/ft ft/day gal/min Aquifer Potential
N-Decline Well 9.7 0.014 0.62 Insufficient quantity and quality of
water for beneficial use
RSS Well 36.9 0.052 2.33 Insufficient quantity and quality of
water for beneficial use
RSN Well NA NA NA Insufficient quantity and quality of
water for beneficial use
UTL Well 1,504 2.12 95 Insufficient quality of water
Slug-In
UTL Well 3084 4.34 195 Insufficient quality of water
Slu¢-out
NA =Well artesian and no[ tested
•
r2.591U\Sepmmber l6. 1997 8
