STATE OF COLORADO
Bill Owens, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
BnKe L. McCloskey, Acting Director
Soudreast Region:
2126 N Weber Street
Colorado Springs, Colorado 60907
Telephone: (719)227-5200
August 11, 2000
Mr. James C. Stevens
Division of Minerals & Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
•
RECEIVED
AUG 16 20~
Division of Minerals and Geology
III IIII_IIIIIIII_I III
~~~~
~~OF`^-
For ~ld/ife-
ForPeople
~7~
Subject: PK Enterprises, Inc., Mule Creek Pit, File No. M-2000-077.
Dear Mr. Stevens:
The Division has reviewed the above referenced 112 application and is familiar wilh the site. Overall, we
believe the application to be very thorough. Although short term impacts to wildlife due to this proposal are
inevitable, long term benefits regarding reduced erosion and improved wildlife habitat will be achieved. We would
offer the following suggestions regarding this permit application:
1. Tree and shrub guards should be used to surround seedling trees and shrubs to protect them, to the extent
practical, from browsing by deer and elk.
2. Trees and shrubs should be monitored for athree-year period to ensure survival. Trees and shrubs that do not
survive during the monRoring period should be replaced.
3. The perimeter fencing should be removed once reclamation has been successfully completed and bond
released. This will ensure unimpeded movement across the site by big game ungulates and other wildlife
species.
4. Sediment ponds constructed to control erosion and sediment deposition should be left in place following
reclamation as an additional water source for wildlife.
Thank you for providing us this opportunity for input. Please feel free to contact me at (719)227-5227 should
you have any questions or require additional information.
Cc: Tonya Sharp, CDOW
Steve Tapia, USFS
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Greg Waldrer, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Bernard L.
