-17 - <br />the early 1890'x, sheep were brought into northwestern Colorado and thus <br />precipitated the sheep and cattle wars of northwestern Colorado that were <br />to last for thirty yearg CF. Athearn 1976: 78-79, 85-86; Halandras 1972: <br />89-93; Jensen 1972: 191). ~ <br />- Impositions created by the White River Agency as supervised by <br />.. <br />Nathan Heeker resulted in the alienaCion of the Ute bands present in the <br />area. These later culminated in the Thornburge and Meeker massacres . <br />i. <br />in 1879. Following these massacres, military troops were stationed in <br />- meeker in order to effect the removal of the Utes to reservations to the <br />souCh,and west. This was accomplished by 1881 and the troops were removed <br />_ +< .. _ -- <br />in 1883 (F. Athearn 1976: 45 -59 ). ~ <br />[: By 1900, homesteads were scattered throughout the region. vhe cattle <br />~_ <br />and sheep industries were the primary economic activities in the region <br />• ~ <br />~~ `~ until the 1920'x, when oil and coal exploitation began to assume <br />economic impoYtantce (F. Athearn. 1976). <br />' INVENTORY RESULTS <br />Literature Search <br />No prehistoric or historic sites located within the project area are <br />4 included in the records of OSAC, the site files of the Department of <br />Historic Preservation or the National Register of Historic Places. <br />f <br />Several sites have been located to the north of the project area during <br />a recent inventory. Specific information on these sites is not yet <br />available, although one may be a Scottsbluff site (Plano Tradition), <br />4: <br />one a Fremont site, and several Ute sites. <br />Field Results <br />r. <br />Y~ Two localities, one a recent sheep camp or dump and the other a i <br />r. <br />P small tic scatter, were recorded.
