-10-
C~ . 10,200 B.C. and 5000 B.C. on the basis of present evidence, is
• characterized by large, lanceolate projectile points. Paleoindians
were dependent upon a hunting and gathering economy with an emphasis
on the procurement of large game animals. In addition'to the diagnostic
spear points, Paleoindian artifact assembldges include stone scrapers,
knives, flake tools and choppers, and a variety of bone tools. Paleo-
indian society is inferred to have been organized into nomadic
egalitarian bands, which included between 12 and 20 individuals and
which operated within a Large territory (Hester and Grady 1977: 78,79).
The Paleoindian tradition is divided into three cultural traditions
based on time, associated fauna and projectile point styles. The earliest
widely accepted cultural tradition within the Paleoindian tradition is
the Clovis or Llano Complex. Clovis subsistence patterns reflect primary
(~l dependence on the hunting of mammoth; other extinct mammals hunted during
l this period .include bison (Bison bison antiquus), horse, and camel. The
fluted Clovis point is diagnostic of this complex. Dates for the Llano
Complex cluster around 9200 B.C. More recent (to 8500 B.C.) Clovis
sites have been described fran the Big Horn Basin in northcentral Wyoming
(Fris.on 1978: 5, 23; J. Jennings 1968: 11). To date, uo Clovis points
in contexC have been recovered in northwestern Colorado, although one
was found in a disturbed area southwest of the study area (B. Walton
1979: personal communication; H.M. Wormington 1979: personal communication).
Data concerning the Folsom Complex in the region is less scanty.
The dates for this tradition range from 9000 B.C. to 7500 B.C. Associated
• faunal remains consist largely of Bison bison antiquus, an extinct form
~-.1 of bison. The diagnostic Folsom spear point is fluted and has a deeply
concave base. It is lanceolate in shape with the maximum width near
the midline. Folsom hunting techniques include individual and group
