1

1.0 INTRODDCTION
1.1 OBJECTIVE ~j~ SCOPE
western Associated ,Coal Company requested the services of Rocky
' Mountain Geotechnical, Inc. to prepare a geotechnical
investigation involving a slope stability analysis for the new
portal face and bench fill for the Red Canyon Mine. This work
' involved performing a geological reconnaissance, a review of
previous soil boring and laboratory testing data and a soil and
' rock slope stability analysis for various slope configurations
supplied to Rocky Mountain Geotechnical by Western Associated
I Coal Company.
1.2 PROJECT LOCATION
' The site is located approximately three miles northwest of
Cedaridge, Colorado in Delta County as shown on Figure 1.
1
1 1.3 PR T._T DESCRIPTION
It is our understanding that the proposed project will involve
construction of a new portal face requiring the construction of a
portal cut and bench fill. Several slope and bench
configurations alternatives were supplied to Rocky Mountain
' Geotechnical for slope stability investigation. The steepest
excavation through the rock and soil at the site submitted was
t calculated to be approximately 0.5 vertical to 1.0 horizontal.
The highest bench fill for the various alternatives was estimated
1 to be approximately 40 to 50 feet high with slopes ranging from
' 2H:1V to 4H:1V. After the mining operation has ceased, the mine
' 1
