- - -„

Revision
February 1982
The permit area is on the south-facing valley slopes with elevation
ranging from 6,140 feet to over. 8,200 feet (Exhibit 2.04.3-B). The land-
forms are typical for the valley setting.
Nine ephemeral creeks and gulches drain the permit area into the North
i
Fork of the Gunnison River (Exhibits 2.04.5-A and 2.04.5-B), All of the
watersheds are quite steep with high relief for such small watershed areas.
Defined channels have not been extensively developed due to the resistance
of the Mesaverde sandstones. Ten to twenty foot drops over sandstone
ledges are common. Dunrud (1976) noted that the drainages follow fracture
systems in the underlining rock. These weaker areas, due to the
fracturing, allow more drainage incisions in comparison to erosion of
undisturbed strata.
2.04.6 Geology Description for Underground Mine
Geologic and Geohydrologic including cross-sections, logs of drill
holes, coal crop lines, coal strikes and dips, test boring, and core sample
results are included in Appendix XIII, and Exhibits 2.04.6-A through
2.04.6-P, Exhibit 2.04.5-B, and Exhibit 2.04,5-C. Additional physical ana-
lysis of strata, above and below on the E Seam are included in Appendix
XVI,8.
Stratigraphy
Western Slope Carbon's Hawk's Nest Mine lies at the eastern end of the
Somerset District, a part of the Paonia Coal Field described by Johnson
(1948). The nomenclature follows that of Johnson, except as noted.

The main coal beds within the permit area are found in the Upper
Cretaceous Mesaverde Formation, which is overlain by the early Teritiary
2.04-12
,~. ~~
