Revised: 07/26/90
• determined due to the small scale of the maps available at the
time of the survey. It was noted however, that the drainage area
of each of the offsite gullies was smaller than that of the
proposed permanent gully on the Bourg property. The survey was
limited to gullies in the Mann Draw watershed in order to best
approximate the precipitation patterns of the Bourg property.
Land management practices in North Park can be considered fair to
poor due to overgrazing. All gullies surveyed were located on BLM
property and thus were managed in a manner consistent with that of
the Bourg property prior to mining.
The the data included in TR #5 Table 1 and TR #5 Figures 7-9
indicate that gully formation is a natural geomorphic process in
the Mann Draw watershed. Creation of a permanent gully across the
Bourg property is, therefore, not only the most practical solution
to control potential erosion, but is also the most environmentally
prudent one. Walden Coal believes that the formation of a
permanent gully across the Bourg property as proposed is the only
realistic long term approach to controlling erosion along this
natural drainage. The gully remained stable through the 1990
runoff season (TR #5 Figure 10).
Walden Coal Company will continue to monitor this gully as
well as the rest of the property for signs of erosion. If areas
become unstable they will be handled according the approved Rill
and Gully Reclamation Plan in the Bourg Mine Permit. Ih light of
• the fact that gully erosion is a natural process in the area of
the mine, it is Walden Coal Company's intention to allow for
normal erosion while taking care to minimize the effects of
accelerated erosion.
•
,~ 5/
F-izcb>cz> /gl2al~
.~ _
