Sundance Resource
Lafarge West, Inc.
April 2007
Ground Water Monitorinn and Mitination Ptan
Monitoring and Reaorting Plan
The operator will install at locations recommended by the consulting
hydrogeologist (Martin and Wood Water Consultants) 3 monitoring wells on-site
to be monitored at quarterly or more frequent intervals. These wells will continue
to be monitored every month during mining and quarterly for one year after
mining operations are complete. This data will be used to establish a baseline
against which relative impacts from dewatering, other operations, and off-site
effects may be analyzed. The operator anticipates monitoring both water
quantity (e.g., water surface level) and water quality using monitoring wells.
Quality will be assessed with measurement of suspended solids and other
attributes for which qualitative standards exist on the adjacent reach of the
Fountain Creek.
Consistently observed data trends during mining and reclamation activities may
make it appropriate to reduce the monitoring frequency in one or more wells. If
applicable, the applicant will request that the Division allow for the reduction in
monitoring frequency.
If the operator does not encounter any problems with ground water during mining
operations, then data summary and water level requirements will be submitted
once a year to the Division.
Monitoring data will be used to identify any changes in groundwater flow or
elevation associated with dewatering or other mining and reclamation activities. If
the groundwater elevation in a well increases or decreases by two (2) or more
feet from the seasonal range (as determined from baseline monitoring data),
such change is attributable to mining operations, and the measured elevation is
not consistent with groundwater elevation trends at the other wells on-site, the
operator will monitor on a weekly basis and evaluate the appropriateness of
mitigation measures if the variation continues unabated.
In the event that the operator is contacted by impacted parties with wells,
verifying a potential injury, within seven (7) days, the Division will be notified.
After the Division has been notified, the applicant will review data from all
monitoring wells and submit a report to the Division within 30 days. Changes in
measured groundwater elevations will be evaluated based on natural
groundwater fluctuations and changes in non-project related local conditions
including precipitation, river flows, and land use. The report will present results of
the evaluation and identify any potential impacts associated with the change.
Mitigation of potential impacts caused by changing groundwater elevations will
