' ~ I'RRT II PROPOShll O1'liRnT10NS
lakes are also shovan (figure 3). These lakes vary in depth from 1 to 5
feet and thus v/ill pro':~ide considerable diversity for aduotic plants, small
fish, and a fcedinci ground for birds such as the heron. Portions of the site
hill be decelopeci into cattail marshes (see figure •4). 1'l:ese mar:;hes v: ill
provide habitat for voles, fiald mice, and ether small marvnals. The large
]ahe in thy. nortlnvestorn part of the site is designed somewhat differently
than the eastern (fishe.ry) 1al:e. The emphasis in this lake is on diversity
of vaater depth and botlorn configur~ition. 'Phese islands were also designed
to pror~iote goose and ciucl; nesting. The western edge of this ]ahe v!ill be
i gently slopiny from the marshes (figure 5). This shallova water will become
a spawning area and in tr++n a feeding area for various shore birds. Tho
upland areas (small hillsl will be reclaimed as dry upland yrassland-sl'rru13
(J)
1 communitios (figure 5). The hill (figure 4) in the soutlwrest comer will be
well-drained and would suppar't coniferous [reel such as Ponderosa pine on
top with pinon-juniper along the dry slopes. The oxbow lake in the extreme
southwest corner (see figure. S) will be a constant level lake and as such
should provida o suitable habitat for spruce and fir along the shoreline.
In summary than wa see the proposed mining site as a much more diverse
area in Uoth fauna and flora after reclamation than exists today. This
diversity will rnako this site more attractive, stable, and biologically more
interesting.
F. Flooding - after gravel mining operations have }seen completed and the
reclamation plan has been carried out the area will lie almost entirely within
the flood plain of liouide.r Creek. There will be no permanent structures within
(a) See appendix IV for flora of the. upland type.
-I/-
+.
