Portal Area
Physical Characteristics
The slopes around the portal area are steep with eastern
exposures and little or no topsoil (Photograph 311.
Implementation
These slopes were seeded in October of 1980 with the follow-
ing mix:
Western Wheatgrass 8
Slender Wheatgrass 8
Sherman Big Bluegrass 4
Canada Bluegrass 4
Indian Ricegrass 8
Wherever it was possible to work ch the slope without caus-
ing downslope movement, the seed was covered by raking.
Management
Spring fertilization was not done in the spring of 1981.
Results
No data have been collected for this area.
Recommendations
Because of the steepness of the slope and lack of topsoil or
even subsoil this will be a difficult area to revegetate. Spring
fertilization should be considered in the future and possibly
additional seeding with Indian ricegrass, green needlegrass,
needle-and-thread, and western wheatgrass. More specific recommen-
dations can be ngde after results are obtained from the current
seeding.
Interception Ditch
Physical Characteristics
This ditch is located directly across from or east of the
Northern {fl portal. The ditch was constructed in the spring of
1980 and was seeded that fall. The ditch banks and the cut slope
above the ditch total about 5 acres in size and all of this distur-
bance was retopsoiled with good quality topsoil.
