Details m methods and time required
for application will be included in the section on Northern U1
mulch.
Management
Spring fertilization with 120 lbs/.acre (30-10-OJ should be
continued for the next 2 to 3 years.
Results
The purposes of a mulch are twofold: (1J to stabilize the
soil or stop erosion and (2J to enhance plant establishment by
providing shade for seedlings, thereby keeping soil temperatures
cooler and conserving moisture. Thus, the mulches used in this
study will be rated m both of these parameters. Visits to the mine
site in late April and early June provided data on these mulches
with respect to their potential to stop erosion. And the June visit
provided an early indication as to the mulch's ability to enhance
plant establishment. However, data from this fall and subsequent
years will be necessary for the complete picture.
Photographs 20 and 21 show the Jacklin organic mulch and
Hold~ro, respectively. Both of these products were very poor at
controlling erosion and did little to enhance seedling establish-
ment. Photograph 22 is jute netting which appears to be very
successful in both erosion control and seedling establishment.
