chokecherry from tubelings exist in a protected draw that is located
approximately me-half of the way up the ditch..
Recommendations
The continuation of the spring fertilization program should
serve to increase total plant cover. In areas deficient of plants,
spot seeding with the more drought tolerant species such as Indian
ricegrass, green needlegrass, needle-and-thread, and western wheat-
grass will also serve to increase the number of plants and total
plant cover.
Steep Slopes Around the Mine and Office Complex
Physical Characteristics
These slopes are located below the parking lot, just west of
the parking lot, behind the tipple, between the service roads to the
mine, and above the mine service roads. These slopes are very steep
and the plant growth medium is primarily a gravelly fill material
(Photograph 15 ). The slope above the upper service road is a steep
cut slope with no topsoil or even subsoil.
Implementation
The slopes between and above the mine service roads and the
upper part of the slope below the parking lot were seeded in October
1979. Diamnonium phosphate at a rate of 300 lbs/acre was broadcast
on the slopes but it was impossible to prepare the seedbed or work
the fertilizer in. The seed mix was as follows:
5 ep cies Rate in lbs/acre
Western Wheatgrass 2
Green Needlegrass 5
Indian Ricegrass 5
Basin Wildrye 3
Rocky Mountain Penstemon 3/4
Yarrow 1/2
Blue flax 1/2
All of the slopes were raked after seeding. Approximately 200
rose, 40 bitterbrush, and 100 rabbitbrush tubelings were planted m
these slopes in October 1979. Shrub and tree plantings consisting
of ten 3-foot pinyon, ten 3-foot juniper, ten gallon-size currant,
seven gallon-size Oregon grape, and five gallon-size potentilla were
planted on the slope in front of the parking lot. This stock was
from Western Evergreen Nurseries, Golden, Colorado. The pinyon and
juniper were planted individually and basins were formed around
