used to.determine whether a site is .eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The criteria used to determine eligibility are those established in the U.S. Government Code of Federal Regulations (36 CFR 60), which reads as follows: National Register criteria for evaluation. The quality of significance in American history, architecture, archeology, and culture is present in districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects of State and local importance that possess integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association, and (a) that are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history; or (b) that are associated with the lives of persons significant in our past; or (c) that embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or that represent the work of a master, or that possess high artistic values, or tfrat represent a signif- icant and distinguishable entity whose components • may lack individual distinction; or •~ (d) that have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important in prehistory or history. Site 5MF2253 fails to meet the criteria established for the National Register of Historic Places, and so is regarded as an insignificant cultural resource. The absence of artifacts and/or features yielding datable materials precludes precise determinations of site age and func- tion; these factors and the lack of buried cultural deposits indicate that the site has little potential to yield significant information if subjected to more tfrorough investigation. There is no evidence that the site is associated with persons or events important to history. Further, the site lacks architectural significance. The masonry is very crude.and represents little investment in labor. t4ANAGEIIENT CONSIDERATIONS In October of 1985, site 5MF2253 was recorded and evaluated by an archaeoloyist with Nickens and Associates. It is herein recommended that site 5hiF2253 be considered ineligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Presently this evaluation of site signifi- cance is a recommendation only; final determination is the task of the Colorado Historic Preservation Officer (SfIPO). To obtain a determination of site significance, a copy of this report, including a copy of the • ~ state site farm comprising Appendix A, must be forwarded to the SfIPO. If the SHPO determines that 5MF2253 is indeed an insignificant cultural resource, then it is unlikely that Trapper 14ining, Inc., will be required
