reduction in the amount of leafy spurge. At the same time, other noxious weeds (Canada
Thistle and Downy Brome in particular) should also be controlled using the same 80%
reduction goal.
Many of these weeds have invaded in abundance, whether it is a local or widespread
infestation, as a result of intensive grazing. If grazing and weed management are implemented
at the same time the quality of this entire special parcel of State land can be greatly improved.
Few tracts of quality prairie are found this close to a major metropolitan area and its careful
management only helps preserve and protect this asset. In a word, continued utilization of this
land for oil, gas, grazing, and sand mining can occur, but those uses should be done with a
view toward better management of the land to protect its assets. The Coal Creek corridor as
well as the Box Elder Creek corridor to the east present some unique opportunities for
multiple uses many of which, if properly implemented, can actually improve the property for
future generations.
Coal Creek Wetlands and Wetland Mitigation DA Permit 198811488 August 2003 Page 23 of 23
