• EXHIBIT H •
WILDLIFE INFORMATION
MINED LAND WILDLIFE STATEMENT
The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for use by the
Land Reclamation Board in their consideration of a mining permit for:
MINE NAME AND DESCRIPTION Noland - 112 gravel mine; S36 T34N R14W, Montezuma
County
The Colorado Division of Wildlife does hereby find, to the best of our
knowledge, that the impact of the proposed mining operation on wildlife will be
CATEGORY (minor, moderate major)
Mine Location:
S36 T34N R14W Montezuma County
Wildlife Species List: Muledeer, coyote, Golden Eagles, Red-tailed hawk,
songbirds, jack-rabbit, cottontail rabbit, pinyon mouse, scrub jay,
Endangered Species Impacted: Golden eagle, hunting habitat
Assessment of Impact on Wildlife:
This is a major deer wintering area. The Division has mapped this area as severe
winter range through the 1041 process.
Mine Reclamation Recommendations:
Reclamation effort toward restoring native shrubs, fortis and grasses is
requested. Because the mining is on aside slope, the area should be benched to
curtain erosion, which would also provide the ability to plant shrubs on the
terraces. Collection of surface water into a pond will provide water for
wildlife away from the highway which would aid in reducing highway mortality.
Diversification of habitat through reclamation efforts wilt provide a wider
diveristy of wildlife for this local area.
Because of the heavy use of this area by deer in the winter we request that
mining be curtailed in the winter. If mining must occur, pit operations between
the hours of 10am and 2pm are encouraged. Employees should not be allowed to
have firearms or dogs at the work site. The Division urges caution to drivers
to be on the look out for deer crossing the highway to avoid accidents.
During the mining, all stored petroleum products should be located so that spills
will not enter the drainage way or other water sources. Surface water should be
directed to a settling pond before leaving the property.
Prepared By: Ruth Lewis Carlson Title: Habitat Biologist
Gate: 10\6\g4
CC: Olterman Zgainer Clark
H~
