Hnmphiies:
T'hle ]attar is written in response to your July 13, 20051etter to Msers. Egitii, sea, sad Gates of the
Colorado Department of Public Health snd Environment (the Department) requesting information on
radiation monitoring dvrittg open-pit mining operations. Replies to your questions Coate from three o£
the Department's Environmental divisions.
The Radiation Management Unit (RMin of We Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division
offers the following comments.
1. The RMU has no jtulsdictional oveLBight of quarry operations that may product radioactive
media incidental to the principal mining activities. The RMi7 will make suggestions based
oa expertise in radiometric measurement and evaluation.
2. Tho RMU does not have any specific written guidance regarding quarry operations. We can
offer reasonable suggestions for assessing coacfana about a>iy produced radioactive media
.Drill cuttings and boreholes can be quickly screened using a Qo{gerMalller or 5cintilation-
type gamma-ray monitoring device. 13oreholea can be loggf3dwith agamma-ray detector to
5nd zones of increased uranium br thorium mineralization. Samples or ztmcs with elevated
=endings can be ftuther characterized using mineralogy andlor radioisotope measurement
techaigtaes. Aradiation-monitoring program for workers would ba prudent. Radiation
fcrgvsure to people should be legs than 0.025 REM per year above backgrotmd.
~ Exhibit B
